【Course Objectives】

By the end of this course, students will be able to:

- Understand key tourism concepts and communicate clearly in English.
- Explain how tourism systems work and apply theory to real-world examples.
- Research and evaluate sources to support academic discussion of tourism issues.
- Critically analyse tourism’s social, cultural, economic, and environmental impacts and propose sustainable solutions for real-world tourist destinations.

【Course Contents】

This CLIL course will introduce students to tourism, beginning with core concepts and academic language before exploring how tourism systems operate through transport, services, and destinations.

Throughout the course, students will analyse the social, economic, and environmental impacts of tourism and apply their learning to real-world contexts through guided academic tasks. They will also explore sustainable tourism models, conduct research, and design realistic proposals for improving tourism practices.

By the end of the course, students will be able to think critically about tourism and propose informed, sustainable solutions to real-world challenges in the tourism industry using academic English.

1 Introduction to Tourism and Key Terms

Students learn what tourism means as an academic concept and identify different forms of tourism by mapping their own experiences and interests.
2 Types of Tourism and Global Trends

Students explore different forms of tourism, such as cultural, eco, and mass tourism, and examine how tourism varies across regions and cultures.
3 Tourism Systems: Transport, Services, Destinations

Students learn how tourism operates as a system, focusing on the roles of transport, accommodation, services, and destination management.
4 Research Skills and Source Evaluation

Students develop academic research skills, learning how to find, select, and use reliable sources related to tourism.
5 Social and Cultural Impacts of Tourism

Students will analyse how tourism affects people, communities, and cultures, including both positive exchanges and social challenges.
6 Economic Impacts and Local Communities

Students examine how tourism generates income and jobs, while also considering issues such as inequality and economic dependence.
7 Environmental Impacts and Sustainability

Students explore how tourism affects natural environments and learn the basic principles of sustainable tourism.
8 Mid-Term Presentations: Applying Tourism Theory to Real-World Issues

Students connect course concepts to real examples, using guided tasks to analyse current tourism problems.
9 Developing Sustainable Tourism Solutions

Students will design practical and realistic ideas to improve tourism practices in response to social, economic, and environmental challenges.
10 Destination Management and Innovation

Students explore how destinations are organised and managed, and examine how technology, marketing, and innovation influence tourism systems and stakeholder experiences.
11 Stakeholders and Tourism Futures

Students analyse the roles and perspectives of different stakeholders such as locals, tourists, businesses and governments and consider long term trends and challenges in tourism development
12 Research for Sustainable Tourism Design

Students develop advanced research skills, finding, selecting and evaluating sources to support evidence based proposals for improving tourism practices
13 Designing Sustainable Tourism Plans

Students apply research and course concepts to create realistic and actionable proposals for sustainable tourism improvements in a specific destination
14 Final Project: Course Completion and Reflection

Students complete their sustainable tourism plans and reflect on how their understanding of tourism, its impacts and solutions has developed across the course

Students are required to watch media and complete readings for in-class activities. Students must prepare for two major assignments.
