Notes

【Course Objectives】

This course aims to deepen students’ understanding of how local communities in Rikuzentakata City have responded to the 2011 Great East Japan Earthquake and Tsunami, and to encourage reflection on how their own communities can foster inclusivity, resilience, safety, and environmental sustainability.
Students will visit Rikuzentakata City in Iwate Prefecture, one of the areas severely affected by the disaster in March 2011.
Rikkyo University students will collaborate with approximately ten students from overseas partner institutions, including Stanford University and the University of Hong Kong, engaging in fieldwork to examine the city’s current conditions and ongoing recovery efforts. Participants will present their insights and learning outcomes to international peers, local stakeholders in Rikuzentakata, and the broader Rikkyo University community.

【Course Contents】

Participants will conduct collaborative fieldwork in Rikuzentakata City, Iwate Prefecture, which was heavily affected by the Great East Japan Earthquake and Tsunami. Students will receive assignments on various topics that will be introduced during the pre-departure sessions. After completing the fieldwork, each group will work on their final presentation.
All participants are required to attend the pre-departure sessions and the post–fieldwork wrap-up session. Students from partner universities will also take part in this course.

English is used as the course language.
