【Course Objectives】

In this course, students will study the historical and contemporary development of cities, examining their role from both urban planning and economic perspectives. The primary course material, written by an architectural historian named Jinnai in 1985 in Japanese and translated to English in 1995, focuses on the economic, cultural, and architectural aspects of Tokyo's development since the seventeenth century. By studying this material, students are expected to gain a new perspective on how to view and analyze cities and apply their new skills to contemporary cities in Asia or other cultures. They will also be encouraged to deepen their understanding through active discussions with students from the ACE partner universities.

【Course Contents】

The course is offered online and is designed for both Rikkyo and ACE international partner university students. The students work together to learn about the role of cities and their historical development, and gain new perspectives to analyze and view cities. The course provides numerous opportunities for students to practice their skills through group exercises and class discussions.

The class meets for three consecutive 100-minute periods over the course of five weeks. The basic structure of each week consists of three parts: (1) class discussion building on reading materials to learn new concepts and perspectives, (2) exercises in small groups to apply the concepts and perspectives to analyze cities of interest, and (3) presentations of group exercises and class discussions to deepen understanding and make intercultural comparisons.

In the final class meeting, each student will deliver a presentation about their preferred city and perspective.
