This course covers the key concepts of the reasons and aftermath of international trade, along with related keywords of factors and patterns of specialization, global value chain, and economic development. Lectures will closely cover the key concepts of the international trade and economic development, and introduce both theoretical discussions and practices. The students will learn how countries interact with each other during globalization and expanding global value chains, and the dynamics of international economies to understand their effects on development.
At the end of the semester, the students are expected to understand and analyze the economic theories and ongoing issues of international economics, and the policy mechanisms to deal with the issues. The course aims to provide theoretical bases and analysis tools to understand the topics of international economics, and the students should use them accordingly to support their own arguments.
This course will be conducted by a Rikkyo University professor, who researches on structural change, innovation, and economic development.
The course is offered online and is designed for both Rikkyo and ACE international partner university students. The students work together to learn about the principles of trade theories, and gain new perspectives to analyze and view economic development. There will be time for small group discussion at the end (or in the middle) of every class with assigned discussion topics. Students are expected to participate actively during group discussions and share ideas, for a critical analysis on the contents covered in class. The class meets for two consecutive 100-minute periods over the semester across seven weeks. The first half of the semester will cover key concepts of basic trade theories, and the second half will link international trade with economic development. There will be two group presentations and two individual briefs, and topics will be given during class as discussion topics.
