Architecture is not something to be appreciated for its design itself. The spaces created inside and outside of a building do not simply exist as gaps with dimensions; the presence of the building can create a sense of peace, dynamism, and even liveliness. With this in mind, we will understand the design of the building itself, the space it contains, and what kind of presentation can be created when a building partitions a space with other buildings on its exterior and creates a new space.
Along with a conceptual understanding of how to perceive space, we will look at the history of development from a functional perspective, changes in construction, techniques for creating and designing a spatial image, and even how to transform the created space, from a perspective that will lead users of architecture to understand the architecture's characteristics. You will learn to see architecture as a tool to create space, not as a mere vessel, and will learn the basics needed to become a good custodian of architecture in the future.

日常的に生活で利用する自宅や大学とは異なる種類の空間を訪れ、その空間に身を置いた時に感じる印象とその理由について考察しておいてください。設計者の意図が反映されているのか、建築空間とは別の要素がその印象を生み出しているのか、感性を研ぎ澄ましてその理由を考察し、日常には意識せずに利用している空間に込められている意味を見出す練習をしておいてください。

机の上のモノの並べ方、花瓶に行けた花と葉、枝のバランス、ジャケットとシャツ、パンツの色の組み合わせ、全てが空間構成の基本です。何気なくものを並べたり、置いておくあなたの動作を見つめ直すきっかけになり、日々の生活に彩りを添えていく習慣が身につくようになれば、この授業を受講した価値があったと思えるでしょう。
建築は、そのモノ自体のデザインが鑑賞の対象になるのではない。建築の内外に作り出される空間は、ただ単に大きさを持つ隙間として存在するのではなく、建築が存在することにより安らぎや躍動感が感じられたり、賑やかさが生み出すことがある。このことを改めて理解した上で、建築そのものの意匠、建築が内包する空間、あるいは、建築がその外部で他の建築と共に空間を仕切り、新たな空間を生み出す際に、どのような演出がなされ得るのかを理解する。

空間をどのように捉えるかという概念的な理解をするとともに、機能面からみた発展の歴史、構成の変化、さらには空間イメージの演出技法や造形手法、作り出される空間の変容まで建築利用者が建築の特性を理解するための視点を教授する。単なる容器として建築を理解するのではなく、空間を作るための道具としての建築のあり方を学び、より良き建築主として将来活躍できる素養を身につける。
