Notes

【Course Objectives】

In the wake of the unprecedented challenges posed by COVID-19, the tourism industry is now moving toward a new and dynamic future at an unprecedented pace. While many issues remain unresolved in the field, new and exciting opportunities continue to emerge.
This course focuses on both the "challenges" and "possibilities" within the tourism industry, with an emphasis on learning how to develop travel product concepts. By taking on the challenge of planning and promoting actual bus tours, participants will experience the enjoyment and fulfillment of tackling real-world challenges in the tourism industry.
Through these experiences, participants will naturally develop essential skills for thriving in today’s changing world, including "practical thinking abilities," "adaptability," and "communication skills," which are further cultivated through group discussions.
Let’s take the first step together as pioneers shaping the future of tourism, exchanging ideas with group members and sharing a stimulating and enjoyable learning experience.

【Course Contents】

The tourism industry has entered a new phase filled with challenges and possibilities following its recovery from the COVID-19 pandemic. Tourism is no longer regarded merely as a form of leisure; rather, it has attracted growing attention as an effective means of addressing a wide range of social issues, including regional revitalization and responses to urban challenges.
In this course, under the theme of “tourism as a means of addressing social challenges,” participants will work in groups to design real travel products and take on the challenge of bringing them to the market.

The course progresses through three key steps:
1. Lectures:
Gain foundational knowledge about the current state of the tourism industry, including practical examples of product development and promotional strategies.
2. Group Discussions:
Collaborate in small groups to exchange ideas and develop them into actionable plans.
3. Presentations and Feedback:
Share your group's ideas with the class and receive valuable feedback directly from industry professionals. If the proposed plans meet the required standards, they are expected to be launched as actual travel products available for sale.

Specifically, participants will work on planning travel products designed to revitalize Tokyo’s nighttime economy by utilizing double-decker open-top buses operating within the city. This theme is also closely connected to addressing social challenges such as coping with extreme summer heat in Tokyo, mitigating overtourism and stimulating the nighttime economy.
Furthermore, in this course, participants will develop their ideas to a level suitable for actual market sales. If a product is selected for commercialization, participants will also engage in creating sales promotion strategies, including social media marketing ideas and short promotional videos. In addition, there may be opportunities to participate in an internship by assisting with the on-site operation of the bus tours.
In addition, participants will develop essential skills required for their future careers as business professionals, including teamwork and presentation skills.
On Sunday, April 19 (18:00–20:00), participants will take part in a fieldwork session, experiencing the Sky Bus nighttime course.
This is a valuable and practical opportunity to experience the tourism field firsthand, and active participation is highly encouraged.

Note: Participants are required to take the fall semester course "Travel Industry Seminar 1 (B)" consecutively.
