備考/ NotesNotes |
The objective of the course is to provide students with an understanding of the relationships between tourism and culture as a tourism resource. At the end of the course, students are expected to have a good understanding of the balance between the promotion of tourism and the protection of culture, and to be able to express their opinions.
This course will examine the relationships between tourism and culture including tangible heritage, intangible heritage, movable heritage and cultural industry. In particular, it will draw a number of cases of World Heritage sites for two reasons. Firstly, it is one of the most important, popular, and resourceful resources for tourism and sustainable development all around the world. Secondly, the World Heritage Convention, which has over 50 years of history, has a well-established system for the protection and promotion of cultural resources, which have many insights and lessons learnt for the utilization of other types of culture for the promotion of tourism. Therefore, by examining cases of World Heritage sites, the course will allow students to think about the challenges of the utilisation and protection of cultural resources and tourism promotion that many types of culture share.
While this course will shed light on World Heritage, it will also refer to other types of culture. It will also examine cases from not only Japan and Europe, but also Asia and the Pacific, the Middle East, Africa and Latin America, so as to expose students to different cultures and regions. By so doing, students are expected to think of how to achieve sustainable tourism in developing countries as well. Students are also encouraged to ask questions and express their views during discussions. The submission of reaction papers is necessary at the end of each session in order to train writing skills.
