The objective of this course is to examine complex relationships between tourism and culture as a tourism resource. At the end of the course, students are expected to have a good understanding of the relationships between the promotion of tourism and the protection of culture, and to be able to express their own opinions, taking into account various aspects and multiple perspectives of the issue.
This course will examine the relationships between tourism and culture including tangible heritage and intangible heritage as a tourism resource. In particular, the course will give students an opportunity to think about the challenges of promoting tourism while protecting and utilizing culture.
The course will shed light on various cases not only from Japan but also from different regions around the world so as to expose students to different cultures and ways of thinking. By so doing, students are expected to rethink their taken-for-grantedness and widen their viewpoints.
Students are encouraged to ask questions and express their views during class discussions. The submission of reaction papers is mandatory at the end of each session in order to further develop their arguments based on what was discussed in the class.

Students are expected to revise what was covered in the class every week and further develop their thoughts in reaction papers that are assigned after each session based on what was learned and discussed in the class. They are expected to work on these reaction papers seriously by providing good arguments and balanced views.
