The objectives of this course are to understand the relationships and challenges between tourism promotion and heritage protection as a tourism resource, and the perspectives to solve these challenges, so as to gain basic knowledge which will be useful in the field of tourism promotion and heritage management.
The protection of heritage (such as World Heritage) has been promoted all over the world, while it is also utilised as one of the important tourism resources. The concept of “heritage” has evolved over the years, and cultural heritage now encompasses not only historic buildings and monuments but also various types of heritage including cultural landscape, intangible heritage, industrial heritage, all of which are used as tourism resources.
This class, through presentations and discussions based on literature readings, will focus on heritage – cultural heritage in particular – and considers what heritage is, the relationships between heritage and society, and what needs to be protected, whether they need to be protected, and if so, what exactly.

観光促進と、観光資源の一つである遺産保護をめぐる課題、そしてその課題解決のための視点ついて理解し、観光開発や遺産保護の現場で役立つ基本的知識を身につける。
The objectives of this course are to understand the relationships and challenges between tourism promotion and heritage protection as a tourism resource, and the perspectives to solve these challenges, so as to gain basic knowledge which will be useful in the field of tourism promotion and heritage management.
世界遺産をはじめとする遺産は、世界各地で保護が促進されると共に、重要な観光資源の一つとして利用されている。保護の対象となる遺産の概念は年々変化し、文化遺産一つを取っても単なる歴史的建造物を指すだけでなく、文化的景観、無形遺産、産業遺産等さまざまな遺産を含むようになり、また、それらは観光資源として活用されている。
この授業では、文献講読を基にしたプレゼンテーションとディスカッションを通じて、遺産、その中でも特に文化遺産を取り上げ、遺産とは何か、遺産と社会の関係、そして我々は何を守らねばならないのか、そもそも守る必要があるのか、あるのであれば何を守るのか、について考える。
