Through the history of the British Empire since the modern era, we will study basic knowledge of modern British and imperial history. The content of this lecture is focused on the British Empire, with consideration of the significance of historical findings on life in modern Japan.
Dealing with the multiple dimensions of empire, try to get a grasp of a big picture, without being confined to detailed individual cases.
Learning is mainly in the form of lectures on the British Empire since early modern period. In order to understand the British Empire, it may sometimes be necessary to return to the history of Britain in ancient times, as well as to the middle-ages. Centering on the modern and contemporary history of Britain, examining examples of major colonies, we will study the diverse and multifaceted nature of empire. In addition, we will approach politics, society and economics from multiple angles.

世界史などの基礎知識については、授業内で適宜紹介する概説書や辞書・事典類等を用いて確認すること。授業内で、個別テーマに関する参考文献を紹介するので、関心のあるトピックについて各自で深く学んでほしい。また、文学作品やドラマ・映画といった映像作品も紹介する。これらを各回のテーマにあわせ予習・復習すること（各回それぞれ2時間程度）。

高校で学習する世界史の知識があることが望ましいが、そうでない場合は授業内で紹介する概説書等をもちいて予習することで補うこと。
レジュメないしPowerPointスライド表示を用いた講義となるが、適宜板書を用いることもある。これらの資料の配布およびコメントシートの回収はCanvasLMSを使用する（必ずしも教場にPC等を持参する必要はない）。
受講生の関心や授業の進行状況により授業計画は若干調整することもある。
近代以降のイギリス帝国の歴史を通じて、イギリス近代史および帝国史の基礎知識を学ぶ。イギリス帝国を中心とした講義内容から、現代日本に生きるうえで歴史学的知見の意義を考える。
帝国の多様な側面を扱うが、詳細な個別の事例だけにとらわれず、細部とともに全体像も把握できるようする。

主に近世以降のイギリス帝国について講義形式で学ぶ。イギリス帝国を知るために、必要に応じてイギリス本国の歴史や古代・中近世まで遡って解説することもある。イギリス近現代史を軸に、主要な植民地などを具体的に取り上げ、帝国の多様性や多層性などを学ぶ。また、政治・社会・経済など多角的にアプローチしてゆく。
