To understand and explain the history, methods, and representative cases of civic participation and community design as practiced in various fields. Students will also be able to investigate the actual conditions of a region of interest and envision the direction of its community design.
Regions are composed of a diverse array of elements, and as a result, community design is pursued across various fields. Many community design methods originate as citizen-led initiatives in pioneering regions, gradually being incorporated into legal systems and policies, and eventually becoming standardized solutions. To gain a comprehensive understanding of urban development, this course consists of an introduction and three main parts.In the Introduction, we will provide an overview of the definitions and scope of urban development and offer fundamental approaches to analyzing regions. In Part 1: The History of Urban Development, we explain the history of urban development and city formation, focusing on both international and domestic examples that have shaped the current state of regions. Part 2: Methods of Urban Development explores various methods and case studies of urban development across fields such as landscape, history, transportation, and green spaces. In Part 3: Contemporary Urban Development, the course will cover efforts aimed at addressing modern regional challenges through urban development practices. Throughout the course, the participation of citizens as key stakeholders in urban development will be introduced as a central theme in all sessions.

様々な分野で展開されている市民参加とまちづくりに関して、歴史や手法および代表的な事例を理解し、説明することができる。関心を持つ地域の実態を調べ、まちづくりの方向性を考察することができる。

地域は多種多様な構成要素から成り立っているため、まちづくりも様々な分野で展開されている。多くのまちづくり手法は、先進的な地域で市民主体の取り組みとして萌芽し、次第に法制度や政策に位置付けられ、スタンダードな解決策として普及していく。こうしたまちづくりの全体像を理解するため、本講義はイントロダクションと3部から成る。イントロダクションとして、まちづくりの定義や広がりについて概観したのち、地域の基礎的な読み解き方について講義する。第1部「まちづくりの歴史」では、地域が現在の姿を見せるに至ったまちづくりや都市形成の歴史を海外・国内の都市を対象として説明する。第2部「まちづくりの手法」では、景観・歴史・交通・緑地などさまざまな分野と関わりをもつまちづくりの手法や事例について説明する。第3部「まちづくりの現在」では、現代的な地域課題の解決に資するまちづくりの取り組みを説明する。まちづくりの当事者たる市民の参加は、いずれの講義回においても重要な要素として紹介されることになる。
