With the aim of understanding the structure of the modern world, this course examines issues of development with a focus on societies and cultures of the peoples, regions, and nations affected, considering them from a cultural anthropological perspective.
The meaning of “development” as used in this course is the practice of giving support and assistance both domestically and abroad, based on the principle of “expanding people's choices.” Since this practice mainly takes place between nations with different socio-cultural and economic backgrounds and between people of different lifestyle situations, it is also a meeting place for diverse cultures and values. In such cases, what consideration and understanding of other peoples and other cultures (especially impoverished places often targeted for development) are necessary? Students investigate and consider specific examples of development assistance and support in Asia, Latin America, etc.

開発をめぐる諸問題について、その対象となる人びと・地域・国家などの社会・文化に焦点をあて、文化人類学的視点から考察し、現代世界の構造をとらえることを目標とする。
With the aim of understanding the structure of the modern world, this course examines issues of development with a focus on societies and cultures of the peoples, regions, and nations affected, considering them from a cultural anthropological perspective.
本講義で扱う「開発」とは、「人の選択肢を広げる」という理念のもとで、国内外において実践される支援・援助活動をいう。そうした実践は、主として異なる社会文化的・経済的背景を持つ国家間や、異なる生活状況にある人間同士で実施されるため、多様な文化や価値観が出会う現場ともなる。そこでは、他者や他者文化・社会（とくに開発が対象とする「貧困」）に対してどのような配慮や理解が必要となるのか。アジア、ラテンアメリカなどの具体的な開発援助・支援の例をあげながら検討・考察する。
