Based on Environmental Humanities and Multi-species Anthropology, students are required to understand power relations among "nature" through various cases in Japan, UK and Africa. This gives students the opportunity to critically rethink nature-targeted tourism and broaden their horizons to create an ecological place.
"Nature" has socially created by human activities and thoughts and it has been produced, represented, exhibited and consumed. This course analyzes how nature-related tourist destinations have been created with reference to specific cases in Japan, UK and Africa. Nature played an important role in the colonization by the modern empire and the building of the modern nation states. Cultural and tourist facilities and events that showcase nature, such as botanical gardens, museums, national parks, and expositions, have shaped the natural landscape based on nationalism. In recent years, ecotourism in which indigenous peoples subjectively participate has been encouraged. In Japan, the value of Satoyama was discovered, and residents are subjectively engaged in conservation activities. Satoyama has also become popular as a venue of art festival and a tourist site. These show us a kind of potential, but at the same time need to be critically analyzed. The course explores how ecological places can be created in times of change.

環境人文学とマルチスピーシーズ人類学のアプローチに基づきながら、「自然」をめぐる権力の諸相をアフリカ、イギリス、日本の具体的な事例から学ぶことで、自然を対象とする観光を批判的に捉え直し、エコロジカルな場所の構築に向けた視野を養うことを目標とします。

「自然」は人間の思想や活動に基づいて社会的に構築されてきたものであり、生産され、表象され、展示され、消費されてきました。この授業ではイギリス、アフリカ、日本を対象に自然をめぐる「観光」がどのように形成されてきたのかを具体的な事例を通して学びます。近代以降の帝国支配や近代国家の形成に「自然」は大きな役割を果たしました。なかでも植物園、博物館、国立公園、博覧会などの自然を展示する文化・観光施設やイベントはナショナリズムに基づく自然景観を形成してきました。近年は少数民族が「主体的」に参加するエコツーリズムが推奨されるようになってきました。日本においても里山の価値が発見され、住民が「主体的」に環境保全に取り組んだり、里山が芸術祭の会場や観光スポットになるなど注目されるようになっています。これらは可能性を秘めていると同時に批判的に考察する必要もありそうです。自然をめぐる観光が新たな局面を迎えているなか、エコロジカルな場所をいかに構築できるかを考えていきたいと思います。
