Among the “fantasy travel journals” of all times and places, this course highlights works created in 19th-century Europe and, through the readings, analyzes the underlying desires of the western journey.
Nineteenth-century Europe reached a period of climactic tension between “fantasy” and “reality,”during which many excellent fantasy travelogues were written. Introducing as many representative works as possible, the course explains the contents in close relation to the historical background. The course aims for students to understand accurately the narrative structure, clarify meaning embedded in the details, and deepen their understanding with related drawings. Travel is a privileged means and way of "knowing” the world. So what kind of transformation has occurred in the nature of "knowledge of the world" that has been questioned in “modernity” where “travel” becomes “tourism," against the background of technological development and secularization? This course attempts to grasp characteristics of the European worldview that has formed "modernity" through comparison with worldviews of earlier cultures.

19世紀ヨーロッパは「幻想」と「現実」のあいだの緊張が頂点を迎え、優れた空想旅行記が数多く書かれた。その代表的な作品をできるだけ多く紹介し、時代背景と密接に関連させながら内容を解説する。物語の構造を正確に理解し、細部に込められた意味を明らかにし、関連する図版を用いて理解を深めることを目指す。旅は世界を「知る」ための特権的な手段であり方法でもある。「旅」が「観光」となる「近代」において、技術の発達や世俗化を背景に「世界の知識」の性格には、どのような変容が起きていたのだろうか。本講義では、それ以前の世界観との比較を通して、「近代」を形成してきたヨーロッパの世界観の特徴を把握しようと試みる。
