Understanding the state of tourism developed in colonies in various ways, and the relationship between the colony and tourism, we will deepen our understanding of the questions, “what is a colony?” and “what is tourism?”.
We will highlight the state of tourism established and developed in colonies and occupied territories held by modern Japan. Regionally, focusing on the Japanese colonies in a broad sense, such as Taiwan, Korea, Manchuria and islands in the South Seas, we will also refer to the human flows to the mainland from each colony. In addition, we will highlight events during the colonial era, found in places of modern tourism, examining their meaning and position.

「近代」という時代に焦点を絞り、そこで看取される観光の変遷を把握するとともに、その背景としてあった「近代性」についての理解を得る。また、それらについての学習を通じて、「観光とは何か」や「近代とは何か」といった問いを深めていく。
Understanding the state of tourism developed in colonies in various ways, and the relationship between the colony and tourism, we will deepen our understanding of the questions, “what is a colony?” and “what is tourism?”.
観光はたびたび「近代の産物」や「近代的な現象」と称される。本講義では、産業革命や帝国主義といった近代を特徴付ける事象に着目し、それらを背景に成立し展開していった観光のありようを取り上げる。また、観光の進展がいかに近代化やグローバル化を促進していったのかについても検討することで、観光を通じたグローバルヒストリーの素描を試みる。
