In this course, students will be able to:
1. Understand that the logic of human group formation and boundary-drawing—including ethnicity and the nation-state—is historically and socially constructed.
2. Critically examine essentialist perspectives that view groups and cultures as "fixed entities," and explain the processes through which they are represented and reproduced.
3. Acquire a theoretical foundation to analyze the "groups," "objects," and "images" consumed in tourism as socially constructed phenomena.
This course offers a theoretical examination of how human groups are formed in contemporary society, providing a conceptual foundation for analyzing tourism phenomena. In the context of tourism, particular groups and cultures are often packaged and consumed as “authentic” or “essentialized” entities. To better understand these phenomena, it is first necessary to examine how the boundaries that separate groups are socially constructed. In the first half of the course, students will gain an overview of social transformations driven by globalization. Building on this foundation, the course will then explore the dynamics of group formation and the processes of boundary construction through various perspectives, including the nation-state, Indigenous peoples, conflict, refugees, statelessness, and racism.

人類学的なアプローチでは、すぐに答えがでないテーマや問題に向き合うことができる知的な態度が求められる。「タイパ」「コスパ」とは真逆の姿勢が求められる。
授業資料は、Canvas LMSをとおして穴埋め形式になったPDFファイルで配布する。教室では配付しない。
各自で印刷するかPDFファイルに書き込みができるタブレットやPCを持参すること。
前年度と評価方法が異なるため注意すること。
双方向的な授業にするため、授業中にオンラインツールを用いて質問をすることがある。ただし受講者数、教室と通信環境から全員が解答できるわけではないため、質問への回答は加点対象にはしない。
進捗状況におうじて、授業内容の変更や内容を集約することがある。
この授業の到達目標は、次のとおりである。
1）エスニシティや国民国家など、人間が集団を形成し境界線を引く際の論理が、歴史的・社会的に構築されたものであることを理解する。
2）集団や文化を「固定的な実体」と捉える本質主義的な捉え方を批判的に考察し、それらがどのように表象・再生産されるのかを説明できる。
3）観光の場で消費される「集団」「モノ」「イメージ」を、社会的に構築されたものとして分析するための理論的基礎を身につける。

本授業では、現代社会における人間集団の成り立ちを、観光現象を分析するための前段階として理論的に考察する。観光の場では、特定の集団や文化が「本質的なもの」としてパッケージ化され、消費される。こうした現象を解読するためには、まず集団を分ける境界がいかなる原理で創出されるのかを学ぶ必要がある。前半では、グローバル化による社会変容を概観した上で、国民国家、先住民、紛争、難民、無国籍、レイシズムといった切り口から、人間が集団を編成する際の力学と境界線の構築プロセスを学ぶ。
