The goals of this course are to
(1) Obtain basic knowledge of travel in the early modern period.
(2 ) Understand the social role and characteristics of travel in the early modern period and explain the characteristics of travel in Japan.
(3) Understand the characteristics and roles of travel culture and exchanges seen in the early modern period and discuss the importance of exchanges in tourism.
During the early modern period, when the feudal military government the Edo shogunate was established, the political and economic environment in Japan stabilized．Although the shogunate did not permit people to move freely, except for trade and official business, the treatment of illnesses (such as hot spring cures) and religious purposes (such as visits to temples or shrines) were recognized as valid reasons to travel. As a consequence, traveling for these reasons gained popularity and gave rise to the development of more temples, shrines, and hot spring resorts. This phenomenon shaped the nature of travel in Japan. The purpose of this class is to examine the social roles and characteristics of travel based on the acquisition of basic knowledge regarding travel in the early modern period and to learn about the travel culture and exchanges that were nurtured as a result.

本講義の到達目標は
(1) 近世期における旅の基本的知識を身につけることができる。
(2) 近世期における旅の社会的役割と特徴を理解し、日本における旅の特徴について説明できる。
(3) 近世期にみられた旅の文化と交流の特徴と役割を理解し、観光における交流の重要性について述べることができる。

近世期は江戸幕府の成立に伴い政治・経済が安定し人々の往来が盛んになりました。これに伴い五街道の整備、貨幣経済の普及など、旅をするための諸条件は整備されましたが、幕府は商業・公用を除き人々が自由に移動することを許可していませんでした。
しかし、病気治療（湯治）と信仰（寺社参詣）は、旅をするための目的として認めており、これが旅の大衆化の先駆けとなるとともに、寺社参詣地・温泉地の発展につながり、日本における旅の特徴を生み出したといわれています。さらに、旅による都市と地方の交流や旅行者と地域の人々の交流は、新たな文化交流となり社会に影響を与えていくことになります。
本授業では、近世期の旅の基本的知識を身につけたうえで、旅の社会的役割と特徴を考察し、そのなかで育まれた旅の文化と交流について学ぶことを目的とします。
