By the end of the course, students are expected to:
1. Explain the interplay between the development of transport and communication technologies and the way we understand time and space.
2. Unpack the concept of 'movement' and discuss some of its overlooked aspects.
3. Develop an understanding of the concept of 'mobility'.
The development of transport and communication technologies in the modern era has drastically changed the speed, distance, conditions, and circumstances of movement of humans and non-humans. How have the science, experience, perception, and representation of space and time shifted amidst these developments? We will trace the transition of the concepts of space and time, with reference to tourism, and aim to review the way we understand "society" and "community". In this process, we will also examine the following questions and consider overlooked aspects of what is today commonly referred to as "movement". What is movement? When, where, and how does it come into being? To whom does it belong? Does it always involve physical presence? How is it perceived, represented, embodied?

近代以降の交通技術や通信技術の発達は、ヒトやモノが移動する速度や範囲、条件や状況を大きく変えました。そうした中で、空間や時間をめぐる科学や経験、認識や表象はどう変わったのか。このコースでは、「観光」という現象を手がかりに近代以降における空間・時間概念の変遷をたどり、「社会」や「コミュニティ」を考える方法を再検討します。またその過程で、以下の問いについて考え、一般的に「移動」と呼ばれる現象の見過ごされてきた側面を学びます。移動とは何か？それはいつ、どこで、どのように起こるのか？それは誰のものなのか？それは常に物理的な存在を伴うのか？それはどのように知覚され、表象され、体現されるのか？
