By the end of the course, students are expected to:
1. Explain the interplay between the development of transport and communication technologies and the way we understand time and space.
2. Unpack the concept of 'movement' and discuss some of its overlooked aspects.
3. Develop an understanding of the concept of 'mobility'.
Since the Industrial Revolution, developments in transportation and communication technologies have dramatically changed the speed, range, conditions, and circumstances under which people and things move. Accompanying these changes have been profound shifts in the science, experience, perceptions, and representations of space and time. In this course, we will explore the phenomenon commonly referred to as "movement" from a new perspective and discuss some of its neglected dimensions."Movement" is often thought of as the traversal of space and the passage of time from a point of departure to a point of arrival. How is it actually experienced and represented? Is movement a "transport" phenomenon, a "tourist" phenomenon, or a "corporeal" phenomenon? By exploring these questions from a novel approach, we will unpack the idea of "mobility".

産業革命以降の交通技術と通信技術の展開は、ヒトやモノが移動する速度や範囲、条件や状況を劇的に変化させてきました。これらの変化に伴って、空間と時間をめぐる科学や経験、認識や表象もまた大きな変化を遂げています。このコースでは、一般的に「移動」と呼ばれる現象を新たな視点から探究し、これまで顧みられなかった側面について学びを深めます。「移動」とは出発点から到着点への空間の横断・時間の経過として考えられがちです。では実際に、移動はどのように経験され表象されるのでしょうか？移動は「交通的」現象なのでしょうか？「観光的」現象なのでしょうか？それとも「身体的」現象なのでしょうか？これらの問いを多角的に考察し、その過程で「モビリティ」という概念を紐解いていきます。
