In this course, we will study the methodology and philosophy of cultural (social) anthropology and ethnography, the fields that place the greatest emphasis on fieldwork, and aim to acquire techniques that can be applied to research practice and thesis writing. The course also emphasizes the opportunity for self-transformation through field experience, and the creative aspect of joining with others is read and understood as field philosophy.
In the lecture, after learning about the philosophy and history of fieldwork (FW), the three methods of behavioral observation, interviews, and community surveys are discussed. In the latter half of the course, we will learn practical techniques such as planning research and recording techniques (interview methods, field notes, photography techniques).
While this course is a lecture course, it also has a practical goal of acquiring techniques while learning the logic of the next generation's way of life mainly through field studies, so it requires a reasonable amount of effort and time. Students will be asked to complete assignments (some students may be asked to give presentations in class depending on the number of students). The assignments are designed to apply the techniques learned in the lectures and to conduct research on familiar people and environments.

『メイキング文化人類学』（太田好信・浜本満編，世界思想社，2005年)は，B.マリノフスキーら近代人類学の創始者のFWについて書かれており，本科目前半の講義で扱う事象を多々含んでいる。
『フィールドワーカーズ・ハンドブック』（日本文化人類学会監修，世界思想社，2011年）はFWの実用的な方法論である。特に日帰りのFW，1週間のFWなど，ゼミなどで実践可能な説明がなされている。
本科目ではフィールドワークに最も重きを置いた分野である文化（社会）人類学の方法論・理念を学ぶことで，調査実習や卒論執筆にも応用可能な技法の習得を目指す。また、フィールド経験を通じた自己変容の契機を重視し，他者と接合することで生みだされる創造的側面をフィールド哲学として読み解いていく。

講義はフィールドワーク（FW）の理念・歴史を学んだのち，行動観察・インタビュー・地域調査という三つの手法を講義する。通常FWというとインタビュー調査がメインと思われがちだが，生態学や動物行動学の影響を受けてヒトの社会性を考察してきた人類学では，相互行為や行動を「観る」「記録する」技法を駆使してきた分野でもあり，これは観光行動などの観光研究にも応用し得るものである。講義では民族誌的作品を読みながらこれらの技法を具体的に理解していくとともに，調査計画の立案や記録の技術（インタビュー方法、フィールドノート、写真撮影技術）など実用的な技法も学んでいく。
本科目は講義科目ではあり，フィールドでの学びを中心に次世代の生き方に関する論理を学びつつも、技法を身に着けるという実践的な目標をも持っているため，相応の努力と時間を要する。受講生には課題を求める（人数に応じて授業内での発表を求める場合もある）。課題は講義で学んだ技法を応用し，身近な人や環境を対象に調査を試行することも視野に入れている。
