This course aims to introduce the functions of the brain and nervous system as the biological basis of the mind and to deepen students’ understanding of a range of psychological problems associated with brain disorders.
In our daily life, it is essential that a wide range of mental functions —such as seeing and hearing, moving the body, experiencing emotions, and communicating with others— operate in a complex yet well-coordinated manner. The brain and nervous system provide the biological basis for these functions, and it has long been known that damage to specific brain regions (e.g., due to stroke or traumatic brain injury) can lead to selective impairments in particular mental functions.
In this course, students will first learn the basic anatomy of the brain and nervous system and then the neurophysiological mechanisms underlying major mental functions, including perception, language, emotion, attention, and memory. Building on this foundation, the course will examine mental and cognitive problems associated with brain disorders, such as higher brain dysfunction and psychiatric disorders.

私たちが日常生活を送るためには、ものを見たり聞いたり、身体を動かし、感情を抱き、他者と言葉を交わすなど、さまざまなこころの機能が複雑かつ適切に働くことが不可欠です。こうした心的機能の生物学的基盤となっているのが脳・神経系であり、脳出血や脳外傷などにより脳の特定部位が損傷されると、特定の心的機能が障害されうることが古くから知られています。
本授業では、まず脳・神経系の構造を学んだうえで、知覚・言語・情動・注意・記憶など多様な心的機能の神経生理学的機構を概説します。これらの知識を踏まえ、高次脳機能障害や精神疾患など、脳の障害に関連して生じる心の問題について解説します。
