Notes

【Course Objectives】

Building on the foundational skills developed in Level 1, the Psychology English Reading Course (Level 2) is designed for students who have some experience with reading academic papers and wish to further improve their understanding and analysis skills. This course provides a step-by-step approach to building confidence and proficiency in reading psychological literature, making it accessible even for those who feel less confident about tackling advanced material.

The course focuses on gradually developing reading strategies and critical thinking skills through exposure to a range of academic papers, from simpler introductory texts to more detailed studies. Students will learn how to break down articles into manageable sections, understand key concepts, and engage in critical analysis without feeling overwhelmed.

Through guided practice and group discussions, students will become familiar with common academic terminology and expressions while building the skills necessary to approach more challenging texts at their own pace. By the end of the course, students will have developed the ability to read and critically evaluate a variety of academic papers, preparing them for further academic study or research in psychology.

【Course Contents】

The English Reading in Psychology Level 2 course builds on the foundational skills developed in Level 1 and is suitable for students who are already capable of reading academic literature and wish to deepen their skills. This course takes a step-by-step approach, helping students advance their ability to read, understand, and evaluate academic papers with confidence.

Students will gain a deeper understanding of the structure and purpose of the sections in academic papers (e.g., introduction, methods, results, discussion) and will refine techniques for effectively reviewing psychological research. Weekly readings will feature a range of academic papers, starting with intermediate-level texts and progressing toward more advanced literature, ensuring students can gradually build their skills. Small group discussions will provide opportunities for students to analyze papers in detail, practice academic discourse, and develop critical thinking abilities. Over the semester, each student will engage with 4-5 papers.

The course also introduces essential skills for critical evaluation, including analyzing research quality, exploring Open Science methodologies, and learning targeted strategies for conducting literature reviews. These advanced elements will help students transition from understanding academic literature to actively evaluating and engaging with it.

By the end of the course, students will have developed the skills needed to confidently analyze and critique psychological research. They will also complete reading practice tasks and submit review sheets to reinforce their learning.
