Notes

【Course Objectives】

This course builds on Psychological Research Methods in English 1 by deepening students’ understanding of how psychological research is designed, evaluated, and debated. The focus is on engaging with contemporary issues in research methodology, emerging practices, and critical discussion of influential studies.

Students will develop greater confidence in discussing research methods, ethical issues, and current debates in psychology, and in expressing informed opinions using appropriate academic language. By the end of the course, students will be able to critically evaluate research practices and communicate their perspectives clearly in extended presentations and discussions.

【Course Contents】

This course is designed for students who have completed an introductory course in psychological research methods and wish to explore research practices in greater depth. Rather than focusing on technical procedures, the course emphasises discussion, interpretation, and critical evaluation of psychological research.

Each week, students engage with selected topics such as replication, open science, preregistration, ethical challenges, and the re-examination of classic studies. Classes combine short lectures with guided discussions, reaction papers, and structured debates, allowing students to actively explore different perspectives on how psychological research is conducted and evaluated.

Assessment includes short reaction papers, active participation in discussions and debates, and presentations. Students give in-class presentations during the semester and complete a final presentation (15–20 minutes) on a research topic or methodological issue, applying the concepts discussed throughout the course.
