【Course Objectives】

The goals of this course are:

- To provide students with an overview of modern research on religion, ritual, and charismatic leadership, focusing on perspectives from cognitive psychology and evolutionary theory.
- To teach students how to critically evaluate research, compare theoretical approaches, and assess their implications for understanding religion and social behaviour.
- To improve students’ abilities to discuss research, present arguments, and express their opinions effectively in an academic setting.
- To introduce students to ongoing debates, innovative methods, and new standards in psychological research related to religion, ritual, and charisma.

【Course Contents】

This course focuses on modern research on religion, ritual, and charismatic leadership, with some exploration of related topics such as conspiracy theories. Drawing on cognitive psychology and evolutionary theory, the course examines how these phenomena influence individual behavior and group dynamics. While many people in Japan and other societies may not adhere to specific religions, most people worldwide engage in religious practices or rituals, making these behaviors key areas of study in human psychology.

The course explores religion and ritual as cross-culturally recurrent social and psychological phenomena, highlighting their role in shaping social cohesion and individual identity. Additionally, students will examine the influence of charismatic leadership and other belief systems, including conspiracy theories, on group behavior and decision-making.

Students will give a 15-20 minute presentation on a topic of their choice and participate in a structured class debate, encouraging the development of critical thinking and communication skills. They will also submit short reaction papers on selected topics throughout the semester. The course culminates with a final report, where students will apply theories and concepts from the course to analyze a topic of their choosing.

Classes are conducted in English and include lectures, group discussions, and interactive activities. The content will be adjusted to suit the language proficiency and academic background of the students.

By the end of the course, students will be familiar with key theories on religion, ritual, charismatic leadership, and related topics. They will also gain experience in critically discussing research, expressing their opinions, and applying psychological and evolutionary frameworks to analyze social and psychological phenomena.
