| 備考/ NotesNotes |
This course aims to introduce psychological approaches to religion, ritual, belief, and charismatic influence. Students will learn how key theories from cognitive, social, and evolutionary psychology are used to explain why people form strong beliefs, participate in ritual practices, and follow influential leaders.
By the end of the course, students will be able to (1) explain core concepts and theories, (2) summarise and discuss relevant research studies, and (3) apply psychological perspectives to real-world examples in a clear and academically appropriate manner. The course also supports the development of communication skills through structured discussions and presentations in English.
This seminar introduces modern psychological and evolutionary research on religion and ritual. The course examines religious belief and ritual practice as cross-cultural human phenomena, drawing on research from psychology, anthropology, and cognitive science.
Students will explore key questions such as why religious beliefs are widespread, how rituals influence emotion and group behaviour, and what roles religion and ritual play in cooperation, morality, and social cohesion. Classes combine short lectures with guided discussion and small-group activities.
Students will give one individual presentation (15–20 minutes) on a selected topic and will submit several short reaction papers based on assigned readings. The course is conducted in English, with explanations and activities adjusted to the English level of enrolled students.
By the end of the course, students will be familiar with major theories and findings in the scientific study of religion and ritual and will have developed experience in critical discussion and academic presentation.
