The course examines some moving-image works from the perspective of “medium specificity” (the notion that each medium has its own properties), in an attempt to understand the experience of media. While cinema, television, music video and animation are all media that transmit (moving) images and sounds, they are different due to the devices used for their reception and functions assigned to them in society. The course considers our relationship with the media, through analysis of significant media works.
After introducing the notion of medium specificity, the course will examine moving-image works which have their own period and regional contexts across various media, including cinema, television, music video and animation. The course will also introduce analytical perspectives on narrative cinema, followed by aesthetic and social examination of television, music video and animation.

いくつかの映像作品を「メディアの固有性」（それぞれのメディアには固有の特性があるという考え）という観点から検証することで、メディアの経験について理解を深める。映画、テレビ、ミュージックヴィデオ、アニメーションは、いずれも映像（動画）と音響を伝えるメディアでありながら、それが視聴される装置や社会の中で置かれた役割によって、性質の異なるメディアとなっている。こうしたメディアの重要作品を分析することで、わたしたちとメディアの関係を考える。

「メディアの固有性」という考えを導入したのち、いくつかの時代や地域という特定の文脈を持った動画作品を、映画、テレビ、ミュージックヴィデオ、アニメーションといったメディアを横断して検証する。映画に関して、基礎となる物語映画にかんする分析的視点を導入し、テレビ、ミュージックヴィデオ、アニメにかんして、美学的および社会的観点から検証をおこなう。
