This class focuses on butoh (or ankoku butoh) which is an avant-garde dance form arose in the 1960s, in Japan. The goal of this class is to understand its history and aesthetics and its social and political context. The butoh is situated on a very turning point of a dance history in 20th century. We will analyze this phenomenon through images, texts, and critiques. While the class mainly focuses on butoh, students will achieve mastery of academic research skills in the field of dance and performance studies in general (e.g. conducting literature searches, writing a graduation paper, presenting) from critical reading of texts, and analysis of aesthetics and artist strategies.
Lectures will provide an introduction to butoh and there will be discussion of dance pieces, with reference to videos. Students will read texts about butoh and dance studies and will present brief reports. In the second half of the semester, students will read aloud a text « The Sick Dancer » by Hijikata Tatsumi, a founder of butoh. The text seems difficult to understand, but we will find the richness of its world and thought about body expressed in it through reading aloud.

戦後の日本で誕生し、1960年代以降多様な発展を遂げた「（暗黒）舞踏」について、その歴史的展開や美学を概観する。20世紀のダンスにおけるダンスの大きな転換点としての舞踏を、映像・写真資料、舞踏家によるテクスト、批評文などから読み解く。なお題材として取り扱うのは舞踏であるが、舞踏のリサーチを通して、ダンス・パフォーマンスといった上演芸術一般を分析するための手法（論文の書き方や研究発表の作法）を身につけることを目指す。

本演習は、担当教員による導入（講義）、作品鑑賞（映像）とその分析、舞踏に関連する文献の講読を行い、舞踏についての理解についての理解を深めつつ、ダンスやパフォーマンス研究の手法を学びます。文献講読については、毎回担当者を決め、内容について発表してもらいます。また、舞踏の創始者とされる土方巽によるテクスト「病める舞姫」の音読を行います。難解なテクストですが、音読することで体感可能な独自の世界観や身体観を体験してみましょう。
