This course reconsiders music not (only) as something to be listened to or performed, but as an everyday activity that is deeply embedded in social and cultural contexts. Students will aim to understand the diversity of music shaped by local customs and values, to examine them objectively, and to engage in thoughtful discussions with others.
Firstly, we will read selected excerpts from Music as Social Life by Thomas Turino, in order to acquire theoretical perspectives for discussing music as part of social and cultural life. Secondly, each student will give a presentation on a music practice from around the world that interests them, followed by class discussions. Presentations in performance or workshop formats are also welcome when appropriate. When selecting a topic, students are encouraged to explore regions, genres, instruments, or techniques that are not familiar to them.

授業ではディスカッションでの積極的な発言が求められる。発言内容の良しあしよりも、質問や問題提起をしようとする姿勢を評価したい。
・発表担当のスケジューリングを行うので、初回の授業には必ず出席すること。発表が単位取得の条件となる。
・出席日数が全体の2/3に満たない場合も単位取得不可とする。
・受講生の人数等によって、授業計画は変更する可能性がある。
本授業は、音楽を、聴くもの・上演するものとして（のみ）ではなく、各地の社会文化と密接に結びついた日常の身体活動であるという観点から捉えなおすものである。多様な慣習や価値観と結びついた多様な音楽文化の存在を理解し、それらについて客観的に考察し、他者と議論を深めることを目指す。

学期の前半ではトマス・トゥリノ著『ミュージック・アズ・ソーシャルライフ』の抜粋を講読し、音楽活動を社会文化の一部として論じるための理論的視座を獲得する。学期の後半では各自関心のある世界の音楽活動について発表し、クラス全体でディスカッションを行う。場合によっては上演やワークショップ形式を取り入れた発表も歓迎する。発表対象の選定にあたっては、自分にとってあまり身近でない地域やジャンル、楽器や技法なども積極的に調べてみてほしい。
