Device perception forms the core of the theory of image and embodiment. From this perspective, this class observes the nature of photographic images, which were the first form of device perception that has ever appeared in human history. It also explores the meaning of the theory of image and embodiment.
After understanding the approach and meaning of device perception, the class focuses on reading the book “The Nature of Photographs” by Stephen Shore, a photographer and photography teacher. This book features a lot of photos. In this class students will also learn the methods of reading photos, and prepare to deliver a presentation of photographic work taken by themselves to the class,

授業はテクストの精読とそれを深めるための講義、議論を中心としておこなう。現代のトピックスについても取り上げながら、展開していく。学生各自が撮影した写真のプレゼンをおこなってもらい、その講評をする回を設定する予定。
〈機械の知覚〉という視角は、映像身体学の核を成している。この視角から、写真という人類史上初めて出現した〈機械の知覚像〉である映像の本質を考察することができるようになることを目標とする。あわせて、映像身体学の意義について、考察することができるようになることを目指す。

まずは、〈機械の知覚〉という考え方とその意義を確認したうえで、写真家であり、また写真教育者でもあるスティーヴン・ショアの著書『写真の本質』を主に精読する。本書のなかには多くの写真が取り上げられており、本授業を通して、あわせて写真を読む方法を学んでいく。そして、自身の写真作品をプレゼンテーションしてもらう。
