The goal of this seminar is to acquire fundamental knowledge necessary to address the question of life in the context of contemporary technological condition. Specifically, it aims to provide an introductory understanding of the philosophy of technology concerning technodiversity, as well as fundamental informatics that bridge mechanical and biological worldview. It is framed by the challenges facing modern technological civilization, including planetary humanitarian and environmental crises, as well as emerging technologies that compel us to reconsider traditional distinctions between life and machine.
From the beginning to the middle of the semester, we will engage in close readings of selected texts. The readings will include Martin Heidegger’s classic work on the question concerning technology, Yuk Hui’s cosmotechnics, which advocates for technodiversity, and Toru Nishigaki’s fundamental informatics, which proposes the informatic turn. Students are expected to read the assigned texts in advance and participate in group discussions based on summaries and questions prepared by designated students.
At the end of the semester, each student will develop their own question and deliver a research presentation that applies the insights gained from the readings.

現代の技術的状況において、生命の問いに取り組むための、基礎知識の習得を目標とする。とりわけ、惑星規模の人道危機や環境危機に直面する現代技術文明の諸問題や、生物と機械についての従来の理解に再考を迫る新興テクノロジーの諸問題を背景として、技術多様性をめぐる技術哲学、および機械論と生命論をつなぐ基礎情報学の、初歩的な議論の体得を目指す。

学期の序盤から中盤は、文献講読をおこなう。文献は、技術哲学の古典であるマルティン・ハイデガーの技術論、技術多様性を提唱したユク・ホイの宇宙技芸論、情報学的転回を提唱した西垣通の基礎情報学を取り上げる。受講生は事前に指定の文献を精読し、担当者による要約・問題提起に基づき、参加者全員で議論をする。
学期の終盤は、受講生それぞれが問いを立て、文献講読を通じた学習の成果を活かして、各自の研究発表をおこなう。
