Notes

【Course Objectives】

In this course, students will work on a photography project and stay committed to photography by “shooting, selecting, and presenting” photos, and repeating the process of seeing, appreciating, and critiquing the photos, with the goal of developing an understanding of photography.

【Course Contents】

Before the advent of photography, only those things preserved in writing and painting had any possibility of withstanding the passage of time; things stored in people’s memories would be lost as soon as they were gone.
Photography originally began with the discovery of natural principles and phenomena. Nowadays with the advances in science and technology, many people started to walk around with cameras in their pockets, ready to capture moments in photos and videos, and immediately posting them on social media and websites.
Consequently, the volume of photos being stored online is growing exponentially by the second, which is beyond our ability to conceive.
Based on our understanding of the historical background, and with the emerging trends in photographic mass production and consumption, this course will explore the question: What exactly are we trying to accomplish with photos? Students will try to answer this question by shooting, viewing, and presenting photos.
In particular, I will first provide an overview of the course structure and a historical review of photography. Students will then present their photos to the class and share feedback and opinions with their peers.
The course schedule is basically as follows, but it is subject to change depending on the interests and progress of the students.

* Prior knowledge of photographic techniques is not a prerequisite, but active participation in class discussion is highly encouraged.
* Students can use a camera of their choice. If you do not have a camera of your own, you may use university equipment (a digital single-lens reflex camera). You may need to use your own digital camera or smartphone camera.
* If you use university equipment, you will be required to buy/have your own memory card (SD card).
