The aim of this course is to improve skills in reading theoretical texts in English through reading and discussing the literature written about acting in theatre (or more broadly, behavior in performance).
Theatre is an art form whose central component is the acting of actors, but what exactly is acting? Where is the boundary between acting and non-acting? What are the frameworks and criteria for classifying, examining, and evaluating acting? We will explore these questions as we read the literature written in English.
The current plan is to read several articles from the anthology, Acting (Re)Considered: A Theoretical and Practical Guide, 2nd ed., edited by Phillip B. Zarrilli (London; New York: Routledge, 2002), but other literature may be included depending on the interests of the participants and the progress of the class.
The class will be conducted as follows (subject to adjustment depending on number of students):
1. Each week we will read about five or six pages of the English text.
2. Students will be required to make presentations. Presenter(s) will prepare a summary or Japanese translation of their assigned section.
3. After each presentation, following the instructor’s supplementary explanation, the whole class will discuss it.
4. Students (presenters and others) should prepare their opinions and questions in advance of the discussion.

演劇における演技（あるいはより広くパフォーマンスにおける振る舞い）について書かれた文献を読み、議論することを通じて、英語の理論的な文章の読解の技術を身につける。
The aim of this course is to improve skills in reading theoretical texts in English through reading and discussing the literature written about acting in theatre (or more broadly, behavior in performance).
演劇は、俳優による演技を中心的な構成要素として成り立つ芸術ですが、その演技とは、具体的にはいかなるものなのでしょうか。演技と演技でない行為の境界はどこにあり、演技のあり方を分類や検討、評価するための基準や枠組にはどのようなものがあるのでしょうか。このようなことを、英語で書かれた文献を読みながら考えます。
ひとまずは、Phillip B. Zarrilli ed., Acting (Re)Considered A Theoretical and Practical Guide, 2nd ed., (London; New York: Routledge, 2002) というアンソロジーに収録されている論文を複数読む予定ですが、参加者の関心や授業の進展に応じて、その他の文献を扱う可能性もあります。
授業の具体的な進行方法については、実際の履修者数なども考慮して検討しますが、いまのところは次のように考えています。
・毎回、講読テキストを5～6ページほど読み進める。
・担当者は、担当箇所を要約したレジュメもしくは日本語の訳文を作成し、発表する。
・担当者の発表に加え、教員が補足を行った上で、クラス全体で議論を行う。
・履修者（発表者もそれ以外の学生も）は、ディスカッションのための準備として、意見や疑問点を整理しておく。
（履修者数によりますが、発表は、複数回担当する可能性が高いと考えておいてください。）
