The aim of this course is to develop skills in reading theoretical texts in English through close reading and discussion of foundational texts in performance studies.
Performance studies is an academic discipline that examines a broad range of human activities—from the performing arts such as theater and dance to rituals, everyday behaviors, social movements, and media representations—as "performed actions," and explores their processes and dynamics.
In this course, we will read and discuss foundational texts in performance studies to learn how to think critically and to engage generatively with artistic practices such as performing arts and performance art, as well as our everyday behaviors.
The course readings will primarily be in English. The current plan is to read excerpts from Richard Schechner’s Performance Studies: An Introduction, 4th ed. (London: Routledge, 2020), but other literature may be included depending on the interests of the participants and the progress of the class.
The class will be conducted as follows (subject to adjustment depending on number of students):
1. Each week we will read about five or six pages of the English text.
2. Students will be required to make presentations. Presenter(s) will prepare a summary or Japanese translation of their assigned section.
3. After each presentation, following the instructor’s supplementary explanation, the whole class will discuss it.
4. Students (presenters and others) should prepare their opinions and questions in advance of the discussion.

パフォーマンス研究の基礎的な文献を読み、議論することを通じて、英語の理論的文章の読解技術を身につける。
The aim of this course is to develop skills in reading theoretical texts in English through close reading and discussion of foundational texts in performance studies.
パフォーマンス研究は、演劇やダンスなどのパフォーミングアーツから儀礼、日常の中の振る舞い、社会運動やメディア上の表象にいたるまで、人間活動の広範な領域を「上演される行為」＝〈パフォーマンス〉として捉え、そのプロセスやダイナミクスを探究する学問です。
この授業ではパフォーマンス研究の基本文献を読み、議論することを通じて、パフォーミングアーツやパフォーマンスアートなどの芸術実践や私たちの日々の振る舞いをどのように批判的に思考し、また探究的に実践していくことができるかを考えます。
文献は基本的に英語のものを扱います。ひとまずは、Richard Schechner, Performance Studies: An Introduction, 4th ed. (London: Routledge, 2020) からの抜粋を読む予定ですが、参加者の関心や授業の進展に応じて、その他の文献を扱う可能性もあります。
授業の具体的な進行方法については、実際の履修者数なども考慮して検討しますが、いまのところは次のように考えています。
・毎回、講読テキストを5～6ページほど読み進める。
・担当者は、担当箇所を要約したレジュメもしくは日本語の訳文を作成し、発表する。
・担当者の発表に加え、教員が補足を行った上で、クラス全体で議論を行う。
・履修者（発表者もそれ以外の学生も）は、ディスカッションのための準備として、意見や疑問点を整理しておく。
（履修者数によりますが、発表は、複数回担当する可能性が高いと考えておいてください。）
