The aim of this course is for students to learn the idea of media/medium and to develop methodologies for researching and analyzing their own topics from the perspective of media theories. The course will enhance students’ ability to verbalize their ideas through presentations and report writing, and to analyze and understand from broader perspectives through discussion with others. Third-year students will explore themes and research methods for the senior projects they will pursue in their fourth year.
Although the texts are mainly about film and animation, the point of view of this course is not to take the content of film and animation as given, but to examine it in terms of materiality, technology, and other media conditions. All students will be required to summarize the content of the texts in a given form before each reading session. Based on their summaries, students will participate in small-group and whole-class discussions to promote deeper understanding of the texts. Students will be expected to understand the arguments of the texts accurately and to develop their own thoughts. Lectures on research methods will also be offered as needed. Through this work, students will explore their own research topics. Third-year students will explore and find themes and appropriate methods for their senior projects, which they will pursue in their fourth year.

「メディア」や「メディウム」という考え方から対象を分析、検討する方法を学ぶ。学術的な文献の読み方、対象についてメディア論的に研究、分析する方法を身につける。発表、レポートの執筆を通じて自身の考えを言語化する能力を養い、他の履修者との議論を通して広い視野から物事を理解し分析する姿勢を培う。3年生は4年次の卒業論文執筆（卒業制作）に向けて、自身のテーマと研究方法を探求する。

文献講読では、主に映画、アニメーションなど、映像に関するものを中心に扱う。ただし、映像の内容や表現を所与のものとして考えるのではなく、物質や技術、環境、その他のメディア的条件（媒介するものの様態、状態）から検討する。文献講読は毎回全員が文献を読み、指定の方法であらかじめ内容をまとめてくる必要がある。各自のまとめをもとにグループと全体での討議を行い、文献への理解を深める。履修者は文献の主旨を正確に掴み、理解を深めた上で、自らの考えを発展させていくことが求められる。適宜資料調査方法についても講じる。これらを通じて、自身の研究テーマを探求する。発表とレポート執筆、それに対するフィードバックを通じて、自らの考えを言語化、文章化する訓練を行う。3年生は、4年次の卒業論文執筆（卒業制作）に向けて調査を行い、自身のテーマと適切な方法論を見つける。
