Through literature and iconography, students approach the Chinese views on the world, life and death, aiming to understand firsthand the Asian ideology, often perceived as intuitive and empirical. This class handles the ink copy of the "Hua Xiang Shi" stone reliefs that date back to the I-II centuries AD.
The majority of Hua Xiang Shi images is engraved on the inner walls of burial chambers, small shrines near ancient tombs, gateposts of cemeteries, and stone coffins. The topics of images are, as stated in the curriculum, the scenes of houses, feasts, theatrical entertainment, carriage parades, hunting, farming, heavens, mythological scenes, moral tales. Students think what is depicted there, why there was a need to draw that, what information it conveys and to whom, by referring to preceding studies and including more recent materials. The class consists of lectures by professors and exchange of opinions between all participants.

文献ばかりでなく、図像を通して中国の死生観および世界観に迫ることで､ 直感的・経験的といわれるアジアの思想をより直接的に理解することを目標とする｡扱うのは、紀元１～２世紀の「画像石」と呼ばれる画像のある石の拓本である。

画像石の大部分は、墓室の内壁、古墳付近の祠、墓地の入口の門柱、石棺などに彫られている。画像のテーマは、授業計画に示すように、家屋、宴会、余興の芸能、馬車のパレード、狩猟、農耕、天界、神話的光景、教訓的な物語の一場面などがある。何が描かれているのか、何のためにそのような図を描く必要があったのか、どのような情報を誰に伝えようとしたのかを、先学の研究を参考にしながら、さらに新しい資料を加えて考える。授業は教員の講義と全員の意見交換によって進めてゆく｡
