Students promote their understanding of expression and transmition in Japanese geino(performance), study its modern philosophical connotations, and learn to summarize their ideas in an essay or oral presentation.
This class handles Japanese geino(performance) in broad sense. "Geino" here stands for performance in front of people along with physical practice, and performance that passed down through generations. For example, it includes not only traditional performances like Noh and kabuki, but also modern theater, dancing, sports, variety shows, and even practical cultural arts like tea ceremony and flower arrangement.
The class features 2 main activities. 1) Common task involving the whole class. Students report the results of activities like reading literature, watching theater plays, interview people engaging in geino. 2) Students present the results of their study and observations of an example of geino, prepared based on their own preferences, and discuss them with the class.
L2 sets the main points for fieldwork study.

日本の芸能における表現と伝承の理解を深め、現代におけるその思想的含意を考察し、独自の論考を口頭発表と論文のかたちにまとめあげることができるようになる。

この授業は、日本における広義の芸能を対象とします。「芸能」はここでは、身体的な実践をともなって人前でパフォーマンスされるもので、かつそのわざが世代を超えて伝承されるものを指します。たとえば能楽や歌舞伎のような伝統芸能はもちろん、近現代の演劇、ダンス、さらにはスポーツ、演芸、茶道や華道のような実践的な文化も含みます。
授業は、二つの取り組みを軸にします。（1）クラス全員で共通して取り組む課題。文献を読む、舞台を鑑賞する、芸能の現場を取材するといった取り組みの成果を発表してもらいます。（2）受講者自身の関心に応じて設定した「芸能」の事例について、独自に調査、考察した成果を発表してもらい、クラスで討議します。
