By dealing with the literature on the nature of photography, the goals of this course are to
(1) deepen the understanding of the studies of the image and embodiment in the field of photography, and
(2) obtain a critical eye on photographic images while cultivating reading comprehension on it in English.
Camera Lucida by Roland Barthes is one of the classics of the theory of photography. After being supplemented of the basic knowledge of photography by the professor in charge, students will carefully read this book (English edition) along with the original French edition and Japanese translation. In order to deepen the understanding of this book, related photographers and photo books will be also introduced. Through gaining the rich and deep experience of looking at a photograph, they will have a detailed insight into the creativity that is latent in their own ordinary days in the perception of looking.

英語のテクストで読みます。原書はフランス語で書かれていますが、フランス語は読めなくても構いません。
この授業は、写真の本質について書かれた文献を扱い、写真の分野において映像と身体の学びへの理解を深めること、並びに、写真映像に関する英語文献の読解力を涵養しながら、写真映像を批評する目を獲得することを目標とする。

ロラン・バルトの『明るい部屋』は、写真論の古典のひとつである。写真に関する基礎知識を教員の説明で補ってのち、この書物を英語版を中心に、オリジナルのフランス語版と邦訳を参照しつつ精読していく。本書の理解が深まるように、適宜、関連する写真家や写真集なども紹介する。 一枚の写真を見ることの深さ、豊かさを学ぶことを通して、日常に潜在する〈見る〉という知覚の営為の創造性について、詳細に見定めていく。
