Students will read introductory texts to the anatomy of movies. The goal is to improve comprehensive English skills and acquire an analytical view of movies, as well as methods for writing about movies.
Students will read Film Studies: An Introduction, 2nd ed., (New York: Columbia University Press, 2020). The book is an introductory student textbook on film studies. To analyze a movie, it is possible to focus on such aspects as style, themes, characters, and the place of the film in movie history. The textbook concisely explains each approach, demonstrates how the student can articulate their ideas, and how to express those ideas clearly and precisely.
During classes, as necessary, students will watch video materials, or consider printed copies of related texts (in Japanese or English).
Students will be asked either to translate the textbook sentence-by-sentence, or to present summaries in Japanese with reference to related videos.

映画分析の入門書的な英語文献を読みます。英文読解力の向上と，映画の分析的な見方，映画について書く方法の体系的取得が目的です。
Students will read introductory texts to the anatomy of movies. The goal is to improve comprehensive English skills and acquire an analytical view of movies, as well as methods for writing about movies.
Ed Sikov, Film Studies: An Introduction, 2nd ed. (New York: Columbia University Press, 2020) を読みます。映画研究について，学生向けの教科書として書かれた入門書的な本です。1本の映画を分析するにあたっては，スタイル面，主題面，映画史的な位置づけなど，さまざまな面からアプローチできますが，それらのアプローチ方法について簡潔に説明されています。
授業時には，必要に応じて映像資料も参照し，参考文献（日本語・英語）のコピーも配付します。
履修者には第2回授業以降，まずは順番に1文ずつ日本語訳をしてもらいます。中盤以降の授業回からは，参考映像を参照しながらの要約文（日本語）の発表をひとりずつ行なってもらいます（1回の授業で複数名が発表することになります）。
