Reading some important classical writings on cinema, the course provides the basic knowledge about film aesthetics and history. The course also offers the opportunity to learn various ways of seeing films through these classical writings. The reading materials are written in English or Japanese, and the students can increase their abilities of reading in English and Japanese through the course.
We will read one short writing (e.g. a short review, a paper, or one chapter from books) per three or four classes. The reading is written in English or Japanese. In the class, reading the writings accurately is required, but to understand the content of the writings more deeply, we will do discussions on them.

映画に関する重要な古典的文章を読解することで、映画美学および映画史にかんする基礎的知識を身につける。同時に、こうした古典的文章からさまざまな映画の見方を学ぶ。文献は英語および日本語で書かれたものを使い、英語および日本語の読解力を高める。

3-4回の授業で、ひとつの短い文献（短めの批評や論文、本の一章など）を読解する。文献は英語あるいは日本語で書かれたものを読む。授業内では、文献の正確な読解は求められるが、書かれている内容をより深く理解するために、それに関するディスカッションもおこなう。
