Students learn the diversity of the modern plays on stages within and outside of Japan. They consider what it means to make theater a profession.
Students learn about the diversity of modern theater by watching recorded videos of performed theatrical artworks (including those not done in the theater) from in and outside Japan. In the first half of this class (Japanese parts 1-3, foreign parts 1-3) it is mainly the plays staged after the year 1990 and the related literature, so that students can think about the framework needed to watch modern plays. The second half of the class (Japanese parts 4-6, foreign parts 4-6) features the plays appearing on international performing art festivals in recent years and the related literature, so that the students can think about the possibilities for modern theater. The students are also expected to think about and discuss the topic of making theater a profession. This course also welcomes students who have no preliminary knowledge about theater.

| 授業では学生への質問も活発に行う予定なので、積極的な受講態度が期待される。授業外の時間を使って実際に劇場に足を運び、演劇を鑑賞する。（そのチケット代（1作品あたり3000円〜目安）は自己負担となる） |
比較的長めの文献を読み、予め内容や疑問点を整理した上で毎週の授業に臨むことが求められる。演劇に関する予備知識は必要ないが、ほぼ毎週の授業で何かしらの提出物が課されるので、履修の際には注意すること。（各回約2時間）

国内外で上演されている現代演劇の多様性を知る。
演劇を仕事にすることについて考える。
Students learn the diversity of the modern plays on stages within and outside of Japan. They consider what it means to make theater a profession.
国内外で上演されている舞台芸術作品（劇場外での上演も含まれる）の記録映像を見ながら、現代演劇の多様性を知る。前半の授業（日本編１〜３・海外編１〜３）では主に1990年代以降に上演された作品および関連文献を取り上げ、現代演劇を見るための枠組（フレーム）について考える。後半の授業（日本編４〜６・海外編４〜６）ではここ数年間に国際的な舞台芸術フェスティバルで上演された作品および関連文献を取り上げ、現代演劇の可能性について考える。その上で「演劇を仕事にする」ことについて、受講生と議論しながら考えていきたい。演劇に関する予備知識のない学生の受講も歓迎する。
