Fashion is a transient thing. But at the same time, it is also an art form that reflects the times most greatly. In this class, we will explore the history and cultural background in which specific styles were born, while studying fashion as representation, considering the meaning of “wearing” and what we all wear.
The first half of the class begins with the ancient Greek and Roman era where we find the origin of fashion, through to the birth of modern Western clothing (14th century) to the creation and formation of fashions leading to the present, examining various factors such as history, art, literature, music, philosophy, and gender. In the second half, based on this knowledge, we will consider the transition of changing fashions from the end of the 19th century to the present.

ファッションとは一過性のものである。しかし、同時に、最も時代を反映した芸術作品でもある。この授業では、そのスタイルが生まれた歴史・文化的背景を理解し、表象としてのファッションを学び、「着る」ということの意味、そして私たちは一体何を身に纏っているのかということを考察していく。

授業の前半では、衣服の源泉である古代ギリシャ・ローマ時代から出発し、西洋近代服の誕生（14世紀）を経て、現代まで続くモードの創造と形成を、歴史・芸術・文学・音楽・哲学・ジェンダーと様々な要素から捉えていく。後半は、その知識を基に、19世紀末から現代までのめまぐるしいファッションの変遷を考察する。
