Students will acquire the following:
1. An understanding of the basic concepts and major issues in aesthetics.
2. A basic knowledge of the history of contemporary art.
3. A basic understanding of issues related to contemporary art today.
4. A basis for cultivating their own critical thinking about contemporary art.
Contemporary art has redefined the concept of art itself, expanding its methods and media in diverse ways. In this course, we will overview the historical development and theoretical issues of contemporary art since the beginning of the 20th century, while reflecting on its relevance to today's world.
The first few sessions will provide an introduction to aesthetics. We will then survey the development of contemporary art from the early 20th century to the present in roughly chronological order, discussing current issues in contemporary art as needed.

現代芸術は、芸術の概念そのものを問い直し、その方法や媒体を多様に拡張してきました。本授業では、20世紀以降の現代芸術の歴史的展開と理論的な問題を概観し、その現代的意義について考察します。
最初の数回では、芸術や美的なものについて考えるための学問である、美学の考え方について導入的な講義を行います。それ以降は、20世紀初頭から現在にいたる現代芸術の流れを概ね時系列順に概観していきます。合わせて、現代芸術に関わる、特に今日的な諸問題を随時取り上げて検討します。
