Notes

【Course Objectives】

This course aims to understand performing arts practices in modern and contemporary Japan through three domains: traditional performing arts, non-traditional performing arts, and practices related to community revitalization.
By examining the activities and discourses of practitioners, students are expected to achieve the following objectives:
1. To be able to explain the relationship between performing arts and society within a historical context.
2. To be able to organize ideas and arguments surrounding performing arts and discuss them in their own words.
3. To acquire analytical perspectives for examining contemporary performing arts and festivals.

【Course Contents】

Japanese performing arts encompass not only forms in which performers and audiences are clearly separated, but also participatory forms in which many people take part, such as festivals and public events. This course examines such performing arts in a broad sense and explores how performing arts and society have interacted over time.
In this course, the term “theory” is not limited to academically systematized theories. It also includes the ideas, arguments, and views of performing arts articulated by those involved in the field through their own practices. By interpreting forms of thought that emerge from performing arts practices, the course seeks to consider what constitutes the “performative.”

The course is organized into the following three sections:
Folk Performing Arts: This section examines how theater practitioners and researchers since the modern period have discovered, re-evaluated, and positioned folk performing arts within the cultural property system.
Creative Performing Arts: This section focuses on attempts at creative performing arts that have generated new forms of expression based on folk performing arts.
Community Revitalization: This section considers the role of performing arts in contemporary local communities through concrete examples of practice.

In addition to lectures, the course includes screenings of audiovisual materials and brief discussions.
