【Course Objectives】

The course will focus mainly on broad technologies since the modern era and consider the relationship between the technologies and human embodiment and the conditions of human vision. According to this examination, students will acquire historical and relative perspectives on the technological environment and the dominant values and worldviews of the time.

【Course Contents】

We humans and the world we perceive are mediated by various objects, instruments, and technologies that also condition individual actions and perceptions. However, this mediation is often not recognized in everyday life. The course will focus on broad technologies since the modern era and will examine 1. how human embodiment, gestures, and sense of vision have been conditioned by the technologies, the technological environment, and the social formation that include them, 2. how human embodiment is related to the technologies and the environment that are assembled in the social formation, and 3. how a "medium" is formed under a particular technological, industrial, and political condition, touching on the concept of "governmentality" and "control". The film and animation content that are helpful to this investigation will also be presented.
