This course centers on visual media. It critically reexamines historical visual media that existed prior to film and television but have frequently been marginalized in media history. Through investigating connections between these earlier media forms and today’s multifaceted media environment, students cultivate the ability to draw insights from the past and reflect on the present and future.
Using concrete examples, we explore how our daily lives are shaped by constant exposure to digitized images on many different screens. We then revisit earlier forms of visual media, viewing them not just as predecessors of cinema, but as media that contained possibilities relevant to today’s visual environment. The course further introduces “Media Archaeology,” a research framework that probes past media formations to shed light on the conditions of current media and the possible directions of future developments.

この授業では、主に映像メディアについて論じる。映画やテレビよりも時系列的には前にあったが、その存在は映画やテレビの陰に隠れてきた過去の映像メディアを、現在の視点から捉え直す。過去の映像メディアの中に、現在の多彩なメディア環境との類似性を発見することを通して、過去から学び、今とこれからを考える力を養う。

現在の私たちは、デジタル化されて様々なスクリーン上を流れる映像に、常に接触して暮らしていることを具体例と共に把握する。その上で、過去の映像メディアを、映画が誕生する前に一時だけ存在したものではなく、現在の映像メディアをむしろ先取りするような、多様な可能性を持つものとして再検討する。過去のメディアの中に、現在のメディアのありようや未来のメディアがどう進むのかについての方向感を探る「メディア考古学」という研究手法についても併せて見ていく。
