To acquire foundational knowledge of contemporary theories of living systems by studying the development from classical cybernetics to neocybernetics. Additionally, students will learn basic approaches to issues surrounding technology and humanity based on theories of living systems.
This course examines how systems theoretical research approaches have conceptualized the relationship between the biological and the mechanical under today’s technological conditions, which challenge and redefine the distinctions between the two. Topics include classical cybernetics, neocybernetics, and their various theories, with a focus on technologies such as artificial intelligence, robotics, genetic engineering, and human enhancement.

人工知能やロボティクス、あるいは遺伝子工学やヒューマンエンハンスメントなど、生物と機械の異同を問い直す今日のテクノロジカルな条件において、システム論的な研究アプローチは生物と機械をどのように理解してきたか、古典サイバネティクスからネオ・サイバネティクスにいたる諸学説を解説する。
