The course examines the aesthetic accomplishments and social functions of cinema in 20th century history to enable acquisition of a foundation in film studies. Students will learn theoretical and analytical methods from this process of historical examination.
The course will chronologically trace the film history. First, the course will consider the meanings that silent cinema had in the U.S. and European contexts. The course will then focus on specific moments to deliver an overview of the history of cinema, from early talkies to classical Hollywood cinema and European art cinema.

20世紀という歴史の中で映画が果たした美学的達成と社会的役割を検証することで、フィルム・スタディーズの基礎を習得する。こうした歴史的検証を通じて、理論的で分析的な手法も学ぶ。
The course examines the aesthetic accomplishments and social functions of cinema in 20th century history to enable acquisition of a foundation in film studies. Students will learn theoretical and analytical methods from this process of historical examination.
授業は時系列にそって映画史をたどる。まずサイレント映画を中心に、アメリカおよびヨーロッパの文脈で映画が持っていた意味を考える。その後、初期トーキー作品、古典的ハリウッド映画、ヨーロッパの芸術映画といった幾つかの具体的モーメントに注目しながら、映画史を概観する。
