【Course Objectives】

In this course, we will show how the distinct fields of "care (therapy)" and "expression" can intersect, and consider what happens to the body and mind when they fuse together. From both artistic and psychological perspectives, we will explore how people facing difficulties in various social contexts and those with disabilities recover and regain their vitality through practicing artistic activities such as theater and dance. Similarly, we will overview how offenders who have lived difficult lives due to innate characteristics or upbringing recover and reclaim the power to live through encounters with others and psychological support. We will also discuss how we can go beyond the one-way relationships of giving or receiving care, and instead achieve a rich two-way relationships.

【Course Contents】

The lecture will be given by professor Jareo, a performer and a dance performer having interacted with the elderly, physically disabled, and dementia patients through dance as well as associate professor Oe, a clinical psychologist who has been involved in psychological support and research for offenders and juvenile delinquents in prisons and other facilities. Various guest speakers such as the following will be invited to talk about their experiences: a poet who has been working in Kamagasaki, Nishinari-ku, Osaka City, as well as an actor, director, and arts manager who conducts art activities while visiting juvenile prisons, psychologists who work with offender treatment in prisons, and youth support workers who assist young people wandering in entertainment districts. Through sharing their firsthand experiences and art support practices, we will analyze what is happening there and explore what the human is, what the mind is, and what a life is.
Below is a rough syllabus for this class, but there is a possibility that the class contents and speed might be changed depending on participants.
