【Course Objectives】

‘Seeing movement' is not only an important psychological function for us (Homo Sapience) as one animal species, but also an important action for us (human beings) living with cultural and social diversity.
The aim of this course is to understand the action ‘seeing movement' from multiple perspectives with several keywords, such as psychology, body, and moving images.

At the earlier phase of the course, students learn about the biological and psychological bases of ‘seeing movement'. In the later half of the course period, students learn about cultural and social aspects of ‘seeing movement’ with historical indications of popular visual media, such as cinema and animation.

Students are expected to explore answers to the question “What is (or can be) the significance of ‘seeing movement' for our humans” by learning through this course.

【Course Contents】

・In the earlier half (6 weeks) of the class, we will introduce scientific findings about the biological and psychological structures, functions, and significance of ‘seeing movement’ in humans as one of animal species.
・In the later half (6 weeks) of the class, we will discuss the relationship between ‘seeing movement’ and human social/cultural activities by showing examples in live-action films and animations with several topics (such as variations, functions, and effects of movement in the visual media) and related discussions.
・Every-week course session will be composed of a short lecture by a lecturer and group discussions/short presentations made by students.
