In our daily life, there are few issues which require an awareness of human rights. However, knowing what human rights actually are is a necessary part of going out into society and protecting our own rights and the rights of those we deal with. It is not simply a case of knowing your rights so you can protect them. If you do not know what human rights are, you will not recognize when these are infringed upon. Also, commonly accepted thinking and majority opinion in Japanese society can be suppressive for the rights of those people who may be viewed as a minority. Lack of awareness can be hurtful to others. The goal of Human Rights is to acquire the basic knowledge and ability to think critically through class learning and to acquire an approach that enables one to consider and appreciate one's own rights and the rights of others.
We will look at cases and social problems to consider:
• How and for what purpose has the concept of Human Rights been established in history?
• What kinds of rights are Human Rights today, and what is the basis for this?
• In contemporary Japan, what kinds of situations related to Human Rights can lead to issues and problems?

法学を履修したことのない学生でも理解できるような形での講義を予定していますので、必ずしも法学専門科目を履修しておく必要はありません。
酒田芳人・伊藤荘二郎の２名で講師を務めます。 講師の弁護士業務の都合により、授業計画に記載の回が前後することがあります（第2回が第3回と入れ替わるなど）。
日常生活において人権を意識することは多くはありません。しかし、人権とは何かを最低限知っておくことは、社会に出て自分や自分にかかわる人の権利を守るうえで必要なことです。知っていれば権利を守れるものではありませんが、知らなければそもそも不当な扱いを受けていることにすら気付くことができません。また、日本社会における常識・多数派意見は、時に、障がい者、外国人、LGBTといったマイノリティといわれる人々の権利を抑圧し、無意識のうちに他者を傷つけることがあります。
授業を通じて、人権についての基本的な知識・思考力を身につけ、自他の権利について思い至ることのできる教養を身に着けてもらうことが、人権論の目標です。

裁判例や社会問題を素材として、
・「人権」という概念が、歴史上どのように、何のために確立してきたのか。
・現代における「人権」とは、どのような権利であり、その根拠はどこにあるのか。
・日本の現状において「人権」がどのような場面でどうして問題になっているのか
について講義を行います。
